Howard Whelan chairing discussion on Antarctica’s beauty

Howard Whelan is a man I very much admire. Not only is he founder of Australian Geographic but he has been commissioned to organise a 12-month Antarctic expedition to celebrate the centenary of Sir Douglas Mawson’s 1911-1914 Australasian Antarctic Expedition. He will be the chairperson for our discussion on the beauty of Antarctica at the Byron Bay Writers’ Festival. I look forward to meeting him.

Sydney Uni’s Fisher Library to get rid of 500,000 books / journals!

I am horrified to discover that the foremost English-language library in the southern hemisphere, Sydney University’s Fisher Library, is to get rid of 500,000 books and journals as part of a Federal Government organised restructure. What are they thinking! NSW Libraries has a mandate to only keep ONE copy of every title and we all know how easily a book can disappear, never to be seen again. Books are a record of our civilisation, of man’s progress throughout history. The printed book is under threat and therefore these old printed copies are even more valuable.
